5 Ideas For Additional Product Photos

Invoke Feelings

The first photo of your product should invoke feelings for the potential buyer. If you don't think that your photos are that great, then do your research. Look around at what other people who are selling withing the same category as you are doing for their photos. Examine the photos. Look and see what you like and dislike about how they set their photos up.

For Example write down what you liked about the photo:

  • The colored background they use
  • The use of props within the photo
  • The depth of feel, and how the photo was taken

It is important that the product photo looks professional. The photo should be clear for the buyer to see. It should also have the right amount of exposure, that way the photo doesn't look to dark. If you are using any type of background, make sure that it is simple clean background without any distractions. If the props and background has nothing to do with your product, then you need to rethink how you take your photos. Pick a background and prop that will compliment your product and not compete with it.

If you are having problems with your lighting when taking photos, then I would recommend that you get a set up like this to start out with.

Close Ups

If you have items that are small or have a lot of detail, then I would recommend that you have a close-up photo of that product. If you have small details that the buyer needs to see before they purchase, then it is important that you capture that in the photo as well. If that doesn't apply to you then I would recommend that you give them another variation. One option is to have a color chart, if they are able to select from more than one color option. You will find that if you do color combinations correctly, most buyers will pick the same colors as what is in the photo.

For Example, I sell stationery so I would give them different color options like these:

  • Show them a design with red text and a navy envelope
  • Show them the same design with Navy text and a Kraft color envelope

I would recommend that you have your color chart as the second photo so they know it can come in a variety of colors.

If you are selling something that can be made in a variety of materials such as t-shirts, then it is important that you show what those materials are.

For Example:

  • Cotton
  • Linen
  • Spandex
  • Polyester

If you offer one or more options, then it is important that the customer knows that they can purchase a cotton t-shirt the same color as the spandex shirt. Let them know that not matter what material you are making the shirt from, that they can get it in any color. That is when you should have a color chart showing them the available colors. If you sell something that can be customized such as jewelry, hair accessories or t-shirts, then it is important that you show them the front and back of the product. Make sure it is clear to the buyer that they can customize your products. Its important that you show the buyer all angles of your products, not just the ones that can be customized.

If you offer some sort of packaging that is important for the buyer, then show them a photo of that as well. If you offer a type of gift wrapping, then make sure that the buyer knows what that will look like. Most buyers want to know how the product will be packaged due to it being a gift or if they have to store it in a certain place.

For Example if you sell jewelry you could package it like this:

  •  Placing the product (necklace, ring, earrings etc.) inside a small clear bag
  • Placing the product (necklace, ring, earrings etc.) inside a nice jewelry box.
  • Placing the product (necklace, ring, earrings etc.) inside a nice cloth bag.

All of those options have pros and cons depending on what the product is. I would suggest that if you are packaging necklaces or anything with a chain, that you use a box. Make sure that you tape down the back of the chain so it will not be tangled by the time the customer receives it. If you are selling earrings or rings, then I would use either a clear bag or a cloth bag. You will find that all of these can come customized to say your business name. Most customers want to know what type of box or bag your package the product in. You will find that people who purchase jewelry want to know how it is package because they have had problems with other sellers packaging in the past. I would recommend that you package the product in a box instead of a bag. If the product does not have a chain on it, then it would be acceptable to package inside a small bag. The reason why I would recommend a box over a bag is because it can become tangled if placed in a bag. If you use a box, make sure it is one that is meant for jewelry. Don't just throw the necklace or product in a box and send it to the buyer. It will appear as if you don't take pride in your work and it is just a hobby for you. You want to make sure that your customer is wowed from the moment they see your product photo to the moment that they receive it.

Color Charts and Variations

If you offer any type of variation for your products, then it is important that you have a photo of that variation for the customer to be aware of. Same thing when it comes to color choices. Make sure that if you offer the product in a variety of colors, that you show them their color choices. If you offer it in different font styles, then that is another photo that you should have. You may think that it is easy for you to add photo of your variation, but it takes time. Having these pictures of the variations you offer will make buyers better understand what it its you are selling. I have seen many shops that have a photo of a different variation that they offer, but not drop down menu. I have also seen shops that do have a drop down menu to add a different variation but did not have any photos for the customer to see. It is very important that you have both if you are able to create a product with different variations such as material, color, font, etc.

For example if you sell any of these:

  • Personalized jewelry
  • Personalized signs
  • Personalized cups or mugs
  • Personalized shirts or jackets

Info graphic

If you have enough room in your listing photos, then I would suggest that you use the last spot for a info graphic. You can have the info graphic direct people to your website, sign up for your e-mail list or to follow you on social media. Unfortunately, Amazon does not allow you to redirect customers to your website. All of these tips can be used on any platform you sell on. I use my info graphic to get people to sign up for my e-mail list by giving them a 15% coupon code. If you are having problems getting your e-mail list going, then I would suggest that you do what I am doing and use it to get people to sign up.  If you are having trouble converting people to your website, then I would use it to redirect people to your website but giving them a special offer they can only use on your website. Another way that you can use it is by showing the buyer that you offer the same style in a different form.

For example:

  • If you make mermaid note cards, and you have that same style in a matching notepad, birthday or baby shower invitation, then you can show them a picture of all the matching items within your shop.

There are a lot of different ways that you can use info graphic to attract more buyers. Don't just rely on the photo to see the product, make sure that you have text that explains the photo so the buyer has a better understanding of the item. If you are able to do all of these tips, then you need to make a master plan. You need to write down in detail what it is that you want to change or add to your product photos. Create a deadline to get that done.

For example:

  • Make first product photo better by using better lighting and appropriate props. Must complete this task by Tuesday next week.

It's ultimately up to you to choose what will work best for your shop. But it is important that you don't over crowd the photo with to much information.
