If you’re wondering whether you should invest in a fancy office chair or a task chair, read more below to find out the key differences and what will be best for you.
- TABLE OF CONTENTS:
What is a Task Chair?
You may be thinking, “Oh great another new trend people are trying to push me to buy,” but you’ll be happy to hear task chairs have been around longer than office chairs.
A task chair is a seat designed for short tasks or hobbies mostly. Not intended for long extended use throughout the day. They are usually specific to the task at hand as well.
You may have unintentionally bought a task chair thinking it was just a regular office chair. This is one of the main reasons people become unhappy with their office chairs. It’s not for sitting 8+ hours at the office!
What is an Office Chair?
An office chair is any chair you use in your office setting. It does not need wheels to be an office chair. It is usually fit to your desk and provides some kind of lumbar support and sometimes arm support. They are made for long periods of sitting time at a desk.
As of recently, office chairs have undergone extensive reconstruction since the usual 9-5 has become more of a 7-6 and studies have come out to show prolonged seating at a desk to affect overall health.
Now, office chairs are more comfortable, ergonomic, and fit to the user.
What is the Difference Between a Task Chair and Office Chair?
So, what’s the difference?
Well, with office chairs becoming more and more tailored it makes the difference between a task chair harder to identify. However, here is how you can tell the difference:
- Task chairs are usually more basic looking with less variety, whereas office chairs come in leather, foam, mesh, and many more design styles.
- Task chairs are cheaper than office chairs normally.
- Office Chairs may be require more skill to assemble.
- Ergonomics – Task chairs are very rarely ergonomic.
Those are just the basic differences between the two. If you want to know for sure which kind of chair you are looking at, it is usually listed in the product description.
Are you Team Task Chair or Team Office Chair?
This decision all depends on your specific needs. Personally I have a great ergonomic office chair at my desk at work, but at home where I log on to check things out or surf the web for 30 minutes to an hour, a task chair works perfectly.
You may want a Task Chair IF:
- Your tasks are short periods of time.
- You are on a budget.
- Your office space is small.
- It is just for aesthetic purposes.
You may want an Office Chair IF:
- You’re sitting for longer than 3 hours at a time.
- You use this chair everyday.
- You suffer from back or other bodily aches and pains normally.
- You just want to be comfortable.
